Lore & Background

The game is set on the continent of Yggdra, where humans, ogres, giants, forest sprites, and other mythical creatures live. Peace reigned under the Holy King until a mysterious group called the Black Army appeared and conquered the land, killing the Holy King. In response, one man formed the Volunteer Army to oppose the Black King and restore peace. The story follows Yuri, a swordsman and leader of the Volunteer Army, guided by the sprite Pirika to protect Phoena, a mysterious girl carrying the Chronicle—a book holding the world's history. Phoena suffers from retrograde amnesia and is later revealed to be the daughter of the previous Holy King.

Reader's Guide

Chain Chronicle is significant as a mobile game that successfully merged tower defense mechanics with role-playing and card collection. Its grid-based combat and class system (including Swordsman, Archer, Knight, Cleric, and later Fighters and Gunners) offered strategic depth. The game's narrative, centered on the Chronicle book and the Volunteer Army's fight against the Black Army, was expanded through multiple media: an OVA in 2014, a film trilogy titled The Light of Haecceitas (2016–2017), and an anime television series in 2017. The global version of the game was shut down on February 29, 2016, but the franchise continued in Japan with sequels and adaptations. Its legacy lies in its cross-media storytelling and its influence on the tower defense RPG genre on mobile platforms.
